Book Review: When God Writes Your Life Story

When God Writes Your Life Story

We have a God who delights in impossibilities and who asks, “Is anything too hard for Me?” ~Andrew Murray

As Christians, we often settle down in comfortable mediocrity. We stay in the safe zone and don’t try to push past what is necessary. Yet our God is a God of impossibilities. He is our guide into the endless frontier of the Christian adventure. Will we follow? Or have we forgotten that we are to be pilgrims?

When God Writes Your Life Story is one of the handful of books that have had a huge impact on my life. I love it because it got me excited about my faith. The authors encourage the reader to realize just how big God is. Living in obedience to Him can be absolutely breathtaking. When insist on holding the pen and sitting on the throne of our lives, we won’t be happy. But when we surrender the pen to God and let Him write the story, amazing things are right around the corner. Of course, it won’t always be easy. We are warned that in this world we will have tribulation, but God has promised that he has overcome the world.

The God of the Universe wants to write your life story. And when He does, you mustn’t expect a mediocre tale.

Author Interview: J. Grace Pennington

J Grace PenningtonThe next author in our lineup of homeschooled authors is J. Grace Pennington, author of Never which I reviewed last Friday. Please join me today in welcoming her for an interview.

How did you chose the story line for Never? What was your inspiration?
It started out as many of my novel ideas do–with a smattering of various disconnected elements that I wanted to get into one story together. I had the idea of the “never” theme, the idea of the mystery, the mines, the western setting, and some other things, and I pulled them together into a single plot with a lot of planning and a little inspiration from some favorite books and movies.

How much research did you do for this story?
Not very much! The element I researched most was probably the mines. I looked up everything I could find in our encyclopedias about coal mining, and talked to some people I knew who had visited or toured old coal mines. Other than that I just researched small elements as they came into the story. Firearms, sleepwear, tobacco usage, etc. Just enough to keep the story fairly period-accurate.

What message would you like readers to take away from this book?
Basically to never give up. Life is often hard, even if most of us don’t have to get worked half to death in a torturous coal mine. Things are tough, bad things happen, and sometimes we feel an awful lot like just letting go of what’s right. But we have a Source of strength that will never fail us, and so we can choose to hold to our principles no matter what the cost. That’s what I wanted to show. Hope in the midst of darkness.

Tell us about your experience with self-publishing. Why did you chose to self-publish?
Self-publishing is definitely a lot of work! I choose it because it offers a lot more control. Everything stays in the hands of the author, which is ideal in many ways, it just requires lots and lots of work. With this, my second book, I had someone to help me with part of the process, a designer who formatted it, designed the cover, and helped me proofread. That made it significantly less hard, even though it was still fairly stressful. I definitely recommend getting help if you can, even if it costs you something, but keeping the control in your own hands seems wise to me, if at all possible.

Are you working on any new books?
Yes! Right now I’m working on the next few books in my young adult science-fiction series “Firmament.” The second book will hopefully be out later this year, and the third book is about halfway finished, while the fourth is just past the outlining stage. I also have another book, “Implant,” which I hope to publish later in the year.

Is there anything else you would like to share with readers?
They say to write what you know. Some people interpret this to mean you can only write about the lifestyle that you live, and experiences similar to those you’ve actually been through, but I don’t think that’s the case. While I’ve never lived in the Old West, never solved a murder mystery, and never once been coal mining, I think I did write what I know in this story. I may not have experienced mining, but I’ve experienced darkness. I may not know mystery-solving, but I do know fear. I may not have had to survive through torture and starvation, but I have had to cling to hope when I felt weak and hopeless inside. I think these are things we can all relate to, on some level. And I hope that readers are able to take something away from it that can help them on their journeys.

Thank you for having me on your blog, Leah!

Book Review & Giveaway: The Pirate Daughter’s Promise

The Pirate Daughter's Promise*giveaway closed*
You all ready for another giveaway? This time the book is The Pirate Daughter’s Promise. I hope you’ll take the time to read the review and leave a comment. Commenting will automatically enter you for a chance to win the book*. The winner will be announced this coming Thursday, January 10.

The little girl nodded but did not speak. Her wide eyes darted around the dank cell and finally fell on Daniel’s face, seeking reassurance. Daniel offered her a smile and glanced at the guards who stood stoically beside the closed cell door. He knew this would be the last time he would see Skye before his execution at dawn. This would have to be goodbye, and he didn’t know how long the guards would allow his daughter to stay.

Skye McHenry has led a difficult life cheered only by her faith and her two friends, Will and Matthew. Most people despise her because she is the daughter of a pirate. When pirates kidnap Skye, she knows they are hunting for her father’s treasure. She is determined to keep her promise to never reveal its location. Can Will and Matthew rescue her before it’s too late?

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and read the entire book the same day I got it. The writing style is a bit unpolished at times, but this does little to detract from the story. Skye’s faith and determination are admirable, and I love Will’s chivalry. I also like the fact that the entire family can read this book. The action and clean romance will keep older readers engaged while there is nothing inappropriate for a younger audience. I am looking forward to reading more of Molly Evangeline’s work.

Book Review & Giveaway: Sir Bentley and Holbrook Court

*Giveaway Closed*

Big day today! I don’t know if any of you have noticed the countdown box in the sidebar, but today marks the beginning of another book giveaway. This time the book is a signed copy of Sir Bentley of Holbrook Court. I hope you’ll take the time to read the review and leave a comment. Leaving a comment will automatically enter you in the drawing for the book*. The winner will be announced in a week on Thursday, November 22.

Bentley mounted Silverwood, look down at his parents, and launched the powerful steed into the kingdom…a kingdom waiting for one young knight to discover the truth of a Stranger.

When Bentley refuses to kill two Followers, his fate is sealed. His days as a Noble night have ended. Now he must leave Chessington in search of the Truth. He learns that the man called The Stranger was, and is, the Prince. The Son of the True King. In his pursuit to follow in the footsteps of his Prince, Bentley becomes a peasant and ventures into Holbrook. He becomes one of the farmers and discovers oppression, injustice, love and a cause to fight for. The day is coming when Holbrook will need a knight of the Prince.

This may well be my favorite book in the Knights of Arrethtrae series. Bentley’s quest for Truth and desire to serve the Prince illuminate truths about God and our responsibilities as Christians. A paragraph from the back cover of the book sums up the reason I love this series so much. “Journey to Arrethtrae, where these knights of noble heart live and die in loyal service to the King and the Prince. These knights are mighty, for they serve a mighty King.” I think that we, as Christians today, often forget to walk in the truth that we are in a battle and should and can fight that battle as mighty warriors, for we serve a mighty King. Never forget, the King reigns…and His Son!

Book Review: Saving Levi

Hopefully by the end of the month, I’ll be able to pull together a list of my favorite orphan/foster care/adoption books in honor of National Adoption Awareness Month. In the meantime, I figured I’d do an extra book review. This will be the first non-fiction book review for the blog. Enjoy!

It would be 24 hours from the time Levi was left to die in the field until I first saw him.

Lisa Bentley and her family were serving in a small, Chinese orphanage when they met the little boy that would become their son, Levi. He had been found in a field, left to die. Seventy percent of the baby’s body was covered in third to fourth degree burns. His survival seemed doubtful. As he fought for his life, Levi drew people from around the world together.

I’d been eyeing this book in CBD catalogs for some time and I finally purchased a copy at a homeschool conference several months ago. It’s a riveting story. Of course, when adoption and orphan care is involved, it doesn’t take much to make me like it! 😉 There are so many stories out there that showcase the very real truth that God cares about orphans. This book is one of those stories.

Poem: His Hands And Feet

He’s a father, a father
To many sons and daughters.
To those who live in loneliness,
To those that wander in distress.

He sees the child by the road
Hungry, dying all alone;
Bids you take that child’s load,
Bids you quiet every groan.

For these souls he gave his life,
Rescued them from endless strife.
Jesus bids us come and see,
Asks us now to set them free.

You have felt his heav’nly love.
You will dwell with him above.
Here below, his hands and feet,
To go to every town and street.

If we do not help them now,
Who will bend to wipe their brow?
If God’s people do not care,
Who will then salvation share?

We who see can’t walk away.
God within us bids us stay.
Asks us now to wash each wound,
And tell of One who’s coming soon.

Poem: When I Don’t Understand

Lord, in the times I don’t understand,
Even then let me trust what You’ve planned.
You name the stars and count grains of sand.
You are the one holding my hand.

You are the one who suffered for me.
It is to you that I bow the knee.
Humbly I stand at Calvary’s tree.
Open my eyes, Lord, help me to see.

Only You can turn darkness to light.
Only Jesus can give blind men sight.
Only You can turn weakness to might.
Only you, Lord, can turn wrongs to right.

In this life I might not understand.
You are the rock upon which I stand.
This, Lord, my life, I place in your hand,
Trusting always in your perfect plan.

This Is Christ

These are tears you were never meant to shed,
This is anger you were never meant to sow,
This is darkness you were never meant to dread,
This is pain you were never meant to know.

This is Satan warring with his minions,
This is sin that causes men to groan,
These are powers fighting for dominion,
This is evil battling for the throne.

This is Jesus who left His throne of glory,
This is the One who came to conquer sin,
This is He who died a death most gory,
This is Christ the triumph now to win.

This is blood that was shed for you and me,
This is death that sets the prisoner free,
This is the Lord who won the victory,
This is the battle, won on Calvary’s tree.
