This months giveaway is a copy of The City of Ember. To tell the truth, the reason for the dystopian theme this month is because I had an extra copy of the book to give away. 😛 As usual, the giveaway is only open to residents of the US because of shipping expenses. (I’m hoping to post a poll soon to see how many of you have e-readers so that I can look into a giveaway that could include my international readers.) To enter the giveaway, leave a comment below saying why you want to read The City of Ember or why you enjoy the dystopian genre.
The box ended up at the back of a closet, shoved behind some old bags and bundles. There it sat, unnoticed, year after year, until its time arrived, and the lock quietly clicked open.
The city of Ember is an island of light in the middle of the great, unknown darkness. But the light is failing. Tension among the citizens grows as the store rooms begin to run out of essential items and the electricity threatens to fail at any moment. Hope seems lost until young Lina finds ancient instructions and recruits classmate Doon to help her figure them out. Can they save the people of Ember before it’s too late?
Shortly after this book was suggested to me I found a copy at the library’s used book store. Curious, I purchased it and took it home to read. I discovered a sweet story about determination, friendship, and hope during difficult times. The story was easy to read and I found the ending satisfying despite a few story threads left open for the sequels. I chose not to read the sequels because of an apparent anti-religious theme in book three. That said, there is no objectionable content in this book, and readers in search of a gentle dystopian read will find it enjoyable.

I find the dystopian genre to be fascinating…it’s quite interesting to imagine how things Could turn out in the world – especially as dystopian novels seem to reveal the evil nature of man better than most other genres.
And if I won this giveaway, maybe I’d actually get around to reading The City of Ember sooner! 🙂

Hi Leah, I saw your post on OYAN and thought I’d check it out. I’ve seen the movie and I liked it a lot, but I haven’t read the book. I’ve heard that the book is better, no surprise there, and I’ve been meaning to get if from the library. But owning it would be even better, of course! ;-P
I absolutely LOVE dystopian novels. The different possibilities of what the world could be like and what technology, or lack thereof, is there is amazing. I’ve always wanted to read City of Ember and by owning it I wouldn’t have to wait for the library to have it. ^_^
I think I saw this movie and liked it… T’was a long time ago, though. 😛 I’d love to read the book. Thanks for the review!

I find the dystopian genre to be fascinating. The novelty of darkness gives you an adrenaline rush. The hope factor makes you want to read on. It’s a fun genre!

I’m always looking for new books to read that can hold my attention. Dystopian novels seem fairly decent at doing this because of what’s at stake. And this one in particular has also been on my long list of books to read, I’ve just never got around to it.

I read the entire series and I really loved the first book. Like you posted, Leah, I didn’t
like the anti-religious theme in bk.3 and bk.2 and bk.4 just weren’t as interesting as bk.1.

City of Ember sounds like a fantastic read! It is something that i am desperate to discover having not read much within the Dystopian genre. I would love to be entered for the giveaway and shall be adding it to my to-read list! x

I love dystopia/post-apocalyptic. It gives me ideas and makes me think of how I would react in that kind of situation, which is useful (at least to me!)
I love that book cover and I’m a big fan of dystopian books. In fact, the last book that I read was a dystopian romance. They’re my favorite because to find love in spite of your circumstances is a beautiful thing.

Dystopian genre is very different and complex in every way. It fascinates me so much that I want to read every dystopian book and this is one of them. I actually have The People of Sparks… I don’t know how I got it but when I saw it in my mini-library, I was like, “How did this book get here? I never read The City of Ember and I have the second book? O.o”
