Parent Guides

LighthouseI often hear moms talking about how much their kids read and how hard it is to know what to let them read. One mom commented on my blog to say, “My daughter is a voracious reader…she has been reading and re-reading Little Women for the past 3 years. She is nine now and it is just hard to keep up with her and know what to offer.” This comment was the inspiration for these parent guides. Whether you are a parent looking for good, safe books to give your kids or a reader hoping to add books to your reading list, I hope the guides are helpful to you. Series are organized by genre and are color coded.

Green: Means I think a book or series is safe to let your child read. Many of these stories are told from a Christian worldview.
Orange: Means I like the book or series but there are one or more things I think you should be aware of before you allow your kids to read it.
Red: Means there are serious issues with the book or series in question and I do not recommend letting your child read it.

Of course, as a parent, you know what your children are ready for far better than I do. These guides are meant as a starting point to help you find books your kids will enjoy. Also, please keep in mind that many of these series have many, many books in them. I have not read every book in each series listed.

I plan to continue adding to these lists as I have time. For now I hope you are able to use the existing guides. Downloadable PDF forms of the guides are available below.

    1. Thanks, Marli! Yes, I did. I adored Marguerite Henry when I was little. I want to add to this list in the future with some individual book (including some written by Marguerite Henry), but haven’t had the time to make that happen yet. This list took a looong time as is. Do you have a favorite Marguerite Henry book? Mine is “King of the Wind”.

      1. I read the Misty series, but after that didn’t read any other Henry books… Mist of Chincoteague was probably my favorite, though I did enjoy Sea Star.

        Will you be covering other animal groups? I was hoping to write about Watership Down next week for Books|Cuppas – my favorite animal book, though it doesn’t fit neatly into that genre. Probably better in the post WW2 fic category 🙂

        1. I think I liked Sea Star the best out of the Misty books. Someday I want to go to Chincoteague for Pony Penning Day.

          Other animal groups? You mean beside horses? 😛 I might do some dog books too, but I really haven’t read fiction stories about other animals. I mean, the Animal Ark series has every animal imaginable in it. And I’ve read books like Gentle Ben. Is that what you mean?

  5. Yes 🙂 Watership Down, the Yearling, or any of the James Herriot stories would be some unique ‘animal’ books… 🙂

      1. Oh, I think you would enjoy the first two James Herriot – delightful! I’ve laughed harder than I’ve ever laughed in those books, and cried… But I believe the 3rd had some language.

        Watership Down is amazing. Beautiful and insightful. I’d put it up there with Lord of the Rings. It’s not really appropriate for young children, but about 12 and up probably. Don’t watch the cartoon though – it’s horrifying 🙂 But the book – ah, you would love it!
